HellBound Train I learned Johnny Cash when I was 9 years old I never did walk that line, I never did what I was told I’ve had a lot of fun stealing Johnny’s sound but will the circle be unbroken when the man comes around because I’ve found I’m on a hellbound train Dear lord I’ve found I’m on a hellbound train yes I’ve found, I’m on a hellbound train I sing hallelujah by and by Well in the sweet, sweet morning When I first saw your lovely face In the sweet, sweet morning, lord Amazing love, amazing grace Amazing love, amazing grace Well, Johnny Cash has been good to me I love the man in black Ole George Jones is almost like the dad I’ve never had And Waylon loving Jesse made me want to have a wife Yes these legends of country made me throw away my life Because I’ve found, I’m on a hellbound train, hummm I love to hear the sound of that lonesome whistle moan Ole Hank Williams is the lost uncle I have never known I would like to stay alive at least one more day To survive another sad song, live to sing another day Because I’ve found, I’m on a hellbound train Yes, I’ve found, I’m on a hellbound train Yes, I’ve found, I’m on a hellbound train So, I sing hallelujah by and by Well in the sweet, sweet morning When I first saw your lovely face In the sweet, sweet morning Amazing love, amazing grace Amazing love, amazing grace

Ballad of the Tennessee Cree Stories I can’t remember about a silver midnight call I hear the shifting, shaping, conjuring my bedroom wall And I hear the lonesome whistle and I buckle and I pray And I ricochet chain lightning as I wait for judgment day One foot above this side of ground with the devil yet to pay, yet to pay I hope you find my sound around and hear my gentle roar Perhaps we’ll meet up yonder under heaven’s golden shore But until then I’ll wander, fall asleep here on the floor For the devil waits for no one but for me he’ll hold the door The devil waits for no one but for me he’ll hold the door, he holds the door I got a million messages, a million things to say For I had to bring some love to earth with the devil there yet to pay And, I am my own invention, I’ve told the story of my birth And my own interpretation of our transforming the earth My interpretation of our transforming the earth, mother earth I have the light and darkness, to separate the rage For the people left me all alone, behind a velvet cage I’m impractical, forgiving, I will turn the other cheek And I’ll leave them angels shivering for the infamy I seek Yes, I’ll leave them angels shivering for the company I keep and the fee I seek A lonesome Tennessee hustler but no I’m not insane I’m a little bit of Tonto, I’m a little bit John Wayne And I had to go to Nashville, to learn how to be free With a guitar and a story, I became the Tennessee Cree With a guitar and a story, I became the Tennessee Cree, yeah, that’s me. No waiting for sheer heaven when I am on the stage For the angels are yet watching and the devil’s yet to pay And I hope I leave us something that is worth the time to say For I know I will never get along with the devil yet to pay Yes, I’ll always have this gift of song and the devil yet to pay Yeah, the devil yet to pay. Mush-a-ring-damma do da ma da (x4)

Coyote 02:09
COYOTE I’m in love with a coyote But she never will come home She’d rather ramble, play guitar, howl at moon and roam Although I’ll always love her, she never will have me She has the rainbows and the stars to keep her company Hey-yah-hay-ha (x7) I’m in love with a coyote Every night I’ll watch the door Hoping someday she will return to vow to roam no more Although I’ll always love her, she’ll never have me She has the rainbows and the stars to keep her company Hey-yah-hay-ha (x10)

GRISTLE AND BONES We got administrators hiding behind a cushy desk Their daddy went and told them that they were better than the rest Now their bringing home the bacon doing what they do best Making us hate each other for the gristle and bone Don’t recognize your own You get drunk with the power and then you go and devour your own So now we got some people with a bit of education They’re plotting and planning out the future of the nation They don’t see beyond the borders of our little reservation Making us hate each other fighting for the gristle and bones Don’t recognize your own You get drunk with the power and then you go to devour your own Don’t you know you’re playing right in, in their hands Don’t you know divided we fall, united we stand, humm(x2) So now we got some people who get what they deserve They better watch their backs, they’re gonna get what they deserve They got a lot of balls, they sure got a lot of nerve Making us hate each other fighting for the gristle and bones Don’t recognize your own Don’t you know, don’t you know Divided we fall, united we stand You gotta love everybody, not only those you want You gotta help everybody, not only those you want Love’in everybody, not only those you want You’re just fighting us, hating us, fighting for the gristle and bones Stop making us hate each other, fighting for the gristle and bones

JESUS AT THE POWWOW I seen a long-haired freaky white hippie Down at the pow-wow grounds He had a dusty white robe and some sandals A crazy wannabe from out of town I said, boy where you from and watcha been smoking Where can I get me some He said you can call me Manuel, you can call me the chosen one He said mister I have walked on water I have healed the sick and the lame They left me there hanging on a cross to die I was resurrected in four days Well, I have risen the dead, I have fed the hungry mobs I changed water to wine, teaching love was my job There ain’t no use denying I’m the son of God Come on boy won’t you follow me (x2) He made it there in time for grand entry He stood up for flag songs He seen the falling owners of the fallen feather And he sent the eagle soaring wondrously above He danced for inter-tribal, sunwise round and round He told everybody just to love each other When Jesus showed up at the pow-wow ground I said Jesus, Jesus tell me now Lord what the hell you doing here I thought we were nothing but pagans here in the western hemisphere He said “don’t worry son, don’t you be fretting none, I love all my children under the sun but now we’re gonna dance and gonna have some fun Come on boy won’t you follow me” (x2)

Hero To Me 03:16
HERO TO ME I was told that long ago you went out on your own You left behind the things you love and all the things you known You didn’t know if you would be coming back You didn’t know if you would survive that first attack And, liberty you gave me And I was freed and you saved me Were it not for you, I’d never have had the chance to be free And now you’re old and you’re a hero to me, a hero to me So you went and fought the fight so that we won’t have to care You came back home to what you left and found us all still there You didn’t care if we would recall You sacrificed when you answered the call And liberty you gave me And I was freed and you saved me Were it not for you, I’d never have had a chance to be free And now you’re old and you’re a hero to me, hero to me As the years go by, you will be a memory And I will tell the children how you shined so brightfully How sharp you looked in your blue beret With your medals shiny medals on display And liberty you gave me And I was freed and you saved me

Baby Doll 04:15
BABY DOLL A handsome old couple Fifty years on the make Fifty descendants they managed to make He was the poor boy, out on his own Wandering the countryside looking for a place to call home She was the lady, with the pretty green eyes Living nearby with her daddy to supervise He said mister I’ll give you this fine pony to ride If only you give me the hand of your daughter to be my bride Her father said listen you look like a fine man I’ll give you my daughter if only you promise me man to man Take care of my baby doll, see her no harm You bring me this sorry ass pony when she’s worth at least the farm Baby doll you can’t realize What you can do to his heart with those pretty green eyes Now he’s got his eyes on the prize, his baby doll, his baby doll On the banks of a river they settled down They raised up a family and he sent them off to town Took in the hungry, brought home the wine Through it all baby doll kept in all in line Through it all baby doll kept in all in line Now they’re old and they are creaky Happy as sin, faced with the question they’d reckon They do it all over again Always together, never alone A healthy happy hearted baby doll of his own (x2)

LET ME LOVE YOU I was never one to believe In a love at first sight I never thought I’d ever need someone to hold tight And, then I turned and saw you there I knew at once I wouldn’t care about anything until your heart was mine I loved the music of your voice, I had to try I had not choice To be a fool for you well that’s my crime Let me love you one more time Let me love you Let me love you one more time Let me love you Let me love you Let me love you one more time Now I only think of you And the face of your silhouette And all the lovely things you do Like no one else I ever met Oh, the way you stole my heart away Astounded me in such a way The way your spirit seem to nourish mine I loved the music of your voice I had to try I had no choice To be a fool for you that’s my crime Let me love you one more time Let me love you Let me love you one more time Let me love you Let me love you Let me love you one more time

LOVE YOU IN VAIN As I walk through the rain Even heaven itself takes the time to explain That the love that I had in my heart for you Was meant to be given away Meant to be given away Like a dream you came into my life once again, Left it all burning in flames Now I lie on the floor, dying in love Knowing I loved you in vain (x3)

ME IN YOUR HEART Now and then, you meet a girl That lights up your whole world And you’d try to make her go Though you know she don’t love you anymore She don’t care Ever since the first time that you met me You wouldn’t let me into your heart God knows why you never want to give me And make me live without me in your heart (x2) As an artist I have ability And a constant sense of vulnerability To be true to my calling I can’t worry about falling in love with you Because ever since the first time that you met me You wouldn’t let me into your heart God knows why you never want to give me And make me live without me in your heart (x2)

Open Arms 02:07
OPEN ARMS In the early morning rain I’ll help you ease your pain With open arms, open arms When your world falls apart I’ll help you mend your broken heart With open arms, open arms There was a time, you were mine After all the tears I cried I’m so delighted that you fell for my charms Who’s to know tomorrow we might just find ourselves alone together Falling into each other’s open arms, open arms (x4) In a breathe we passed through our hearts When we finally tore ourselves apart With a spark that’s brighter than all the stars Who’s to know tomorrow, we might just find ourselves alone together Falling into each other’s open arms, open arms (x4)

about

What would you like listeners to get out of listening to your album?

“I would like people to know there’s many different shades of Indigenous identity, there’s not one story of Indigenous identity, there’s many varieties of what makes up the identity of an Indigenous person. So, I want people to know that it’s not what you see in an Indigenous study 101. A lot of that is what you call Pan-American or Pan-Indigenous culture, what I try to do is go right to the communities and community stories and peoples stories, right to the heart of the song carriers and the people themselves.”
Meeting Myself at Raven Street is a narrative storytelling acoustic album about the greatest Canadian Indigenous singer-songwriter you’ve never heard of - until now.
There are 1,748 kilometers between the Cree community of Moose Factory, Ontario and Music City USA - Nashville, Tennessee.
In 2006, Kevin Schofield embarked on a musical journey and made a pilgrimage with his guitar to live out his dream of playing music on the same stages of his childhood heroes and musical influences from Johnny Cash to Hank Williams. For Kevin, the journey wasn’t just about the promise of being discovered but a form of therapy to try and quiet the psychological demons that most men take to their graves.
That trip changed his life in unexpected ways.
A self-taught country music singer-songwriter, Kevin started life living a traditional Cree upbringing on a trapline with his grandparents, through his early ages and teen years he e was sent away from his community to live in a boarding school in North Bay as a teenager, and when his mother relocated to Toronto, he would follow behind during summer vacations and hone his musical craft busking on the streets of Toronto. As an adult he continued to busk and play open mic’s, never gaining any notoriety and lived on the margins. He eventually married and moved to Ottawa where he tried to integrate into the music scene without success. Eventually his marriage failed and weeks after his divorce from the mother of his two children, Kevin made the journey to Nashville. Kevin’s vocal style was reminiscent of Johnny Cash and an early fan dubbed him “The Tennessee Cree” (a play on Cash’s back-up band the Tennessee Three). Armed with a new moniker and a sense of purpose Kevin returned to Ottawa but was felled by a stroke that left him in a coma and when he came to, he had lost the use of his left arm. Not being able to play was a fate worse than death – Kevin spiraled downward, but his son Gage came to his aid – he put the guitar around his shoulders and lifted his arm to allow him to strum two chords – this small gesture gave him a hope that he might play again. In a little more than a year Kevin returned to playing open mic events in bars and busking on the streets of the Nation's capital. His hard work, perseverance and determination seemingly paid off when he was given an opportunity to perform at an Indigenous music event at the National Arts Centre only to suffer a great humiliation when his “big break” was canceled without explanation. Although the traditional career path has not favored him, Kevin found a patron who has booked him studio time and recorded his first studio album of his songs that will be released on May 1st, 2022. This collection of original songs and lyrics are poignant, stinging tales of witnessing major cultural and lifestyle shifts in his community and speak of the inner psychological turbulence of being born with Cree and Scottish descent. Meeting Myself at Raven Street is the coming-of- age album and story of Indigenous singer-songwriter Kevin Schofield, also known as The Tennessee Cree.
